In 1973, there was no market for Black Pearls. A renowned dealer known as the Pearl King went into business with a Frenchman to sell the pearls. All his initial marketing efforts failed. He could have declared them worthless and tried to grow their value that way. But he did not do any of these things. Instead, he waited a full year during which time they collected the best of the Black Pearls and brought a strand to his friend Harry Winston. They were still the same Black Pearls no one wanted a year earlier.
