Tostig had been heavy handed with northumbria. He'd repeatedly drugged northumbria into southern political issues, and he was now taxing the bejeses out of them to pay for campaigns that only benefited his southern family. And so it turns out, did tostig. We actually have entire poems written about how much tostig disliked his brother. It isn't clear when things went bad, but they were bad now.
