The Immigrants Who Came to America

By the 1870s, all of Italy was united, but conditions in the south were very poor. The rise of transatlantic steamship travel made it preferable for many men who were looking for work to make the same journey that Germans, Russians, Irish, and hundreds of thousands of other immigrants had already done. In the decade of the 1880s, more than a third of those Italian men who had come to America actually went back home to southern Italy.
