Introduction
The first large steel and iron plant in the Chicago area was founded in 1857 by Eber B. Ward. In 1889, the two plants of the North Chicago Rolling Mill Company became part of the new Illinois Steel Company. The south side mill referred to as South Works was the largest producer of structural steel in the world. At its peak, the south works mill employed 20,000 people.
