Richard Sharp insisted that he be on the interview panel to select who the next Director of News should be. Someone who had given £400,000 to the Conservative Party was involved in the decision-making and there was enormous disquiet at the top of the BBC about it. If we had known then that this was the case, this would almost certainly have led to Mr Sharp having to accuse himself from consideration.
