Captain Cook found Indians tending to the land with an extraordinary degree of solicitude when he arrived in Botany Deh Bay. There was a wisdom and a tenderness in the way that the Wampanoic for instance, ran much of eastern Massachusetts. We regard the earth as something to take those vendable items of vendable goodness and extract from it. But we started to extract things from it initially, relatively responsibly but not today.
