In DNC section 93, the LDS Doctrine and Covenants, Joseph Smith restores lost writings from John. In this revelation, Joseph Smith refers to the writer as John in the first person. This idea reflects a theology that is completely antithetical to what the author of the gospel of John would have written. That presents a significant challenge for traditional believers once they're exposed to higher criticism.
