The Importance of Studying Russian History

When I grew up, the Soviet Union seemed like half the world. So studying Russia for someone who grew up in England was a bit like studying the other half of humanity. In no institution that I know of, do we actually teach courses on humanity, the history of humanity? That's not the best way to study humans with nuclear weapons.
