Is There a Need for Lab Testing?

i'm assuming that very few of these studies have done lab testing, unless they were just trying to quatify the impact on a mechanism. I made that distinguishment just because i feel like so much of the field has gone into this direction where people could very simply just use natural compounds. But for some reason there's this need to insert lab testing into it and just drive up the cost and likely roduce the efficacy because of that.
