A Brief History of England, by David Hume
David hume blew away that happy parliamentary view of the eternal fight for ancient liberties. He made a bonfire therefore, of all those whiggish favorites. There had been no anglo saxon liberty. Normans had brought enlightenment and culture not ploughing furniture. Simon de montford was a cruel destroyer. And magna carta had bought no liberties for the people. Anyway, liberties hadn't come from england, but from france out. Liberty came not from resistance to monarchy.
