David hume blew away that happy parliamentary view of the eternal fight for ancient liberties. He made a bonfire therefore, of all those whiggish favorites. There had been no anglo saxon liberty. Normans had brought enlightenment and culture not ploughing furniture. Simon de montford was a cruel destroyer. And magna carta had bought no liberties for the people.
