The Chaos of Retributive Justice
There's no such thing as a mitigating circumstance. Nobody cares or should say it's not part of the, as Foucault would say, the economy of this system to account for those things. It all flows from this authority of the sovereigns. So there's a sense in which just by exacting that retribution on the body of the criminal, you're accomplishing the goal within the economy of the system as it stands in that era.
