For the past 100 years, it has been a nonstop debate of Westernization versus traditional essence. So long as you culturally identify to the so-called Chinese culture, then you will be taken as a Chinese. But now that kind of connection or conflict is added with another layer that is political and racial. I mean, you can see Chinese intellectuals in general began to find ways to crack that problem by going back to the roots.
