The Role of Voice in Speech
The way that voices are in those cultures is very much dependent on the type of culture that we have. Men, for example, have heavier vocal folds than women on average. You can stretch your vocal folds out to make them thinner and you can bunch their vocal folds up unconsciously even to make them thicker. And it seems like we learn what the appropriate voice pitch for our gender is. That has a huge impact on the pitch we adopt as we go into adulthood.
