Mangushev and his unit were getting a lot more media coverage in recent months. This may suggest that he was being groomed as a future hero of the war precisely for PR benefit. Then there's also the suggestion that this may have been a proxy attack on Pragogen. It could be that he was a pawn being carefully groomed, if I continue the chess metaphor, to be promoted into a rook, a bishop or maybe even a queen - therefore he had to be taken off the board.
