Sugar is a word brought to Europe by the Arabs which they got from the Persians. It all goes back to a Sanskrit word Sarcara which originally meant grit as in a sandy substance something consisting of little hard particles India about 2000 years ago is where they first perfected the process of Boiling down cane sugar juice for sweeteners. They naturally called the resulting substance grit Sarcara and thus the Sanskrit word for grit transformed into a word for concentrated isolated sweet chemicals.
