ambient music is made with acoustic and guitar based instruments, string instruments. These days, a lot of it is sort of synthesized. Some people think of it as sort of like audio wallpaper, which is slightly insulting but it kind of doesn't necessarily shout for your attention. It's very very atmosphere mood music that's just like a sort of audio Rothko painting.
