Are AIs Really Planning in the Real World?

I feel pretty uncertain about whether systems that play esports like Dota or StarCraft are actually doing planning in a meaningful sense. I think the Go and Chess engines that were built by DeepMind, like Alpha Zero, they clearly do some type of planning, but in a very narrow domain. But it still seems like being able to generate the plan is much closer to being able to act on the plan than we might have expected a few years ago. Like, it does seem like a gradual process, but we seem like surprisingly far along the root of systems that are actually able to generate compelling plans.
