One of my old favourite sapphire and steel is a u k a, a thriller series from the seventies. Do watch it, but don't watch late at night. A one that blew my mind was the blar witch project because they were like, no, but no, no monsters in it at all. All er, as you say, camera angles and ar theramin and little patches of light and absolutely terrifying. Just really, really, really skeary. And i feel that good research is what allows you to have your cake and eat it, so to speak. You can understand reader expectations and then also develop them in a way which is creatively fulfilling for you.
