During conflict for avoidant people, it's quite common to kind of blank out. Let your partner in and that is going to go so far in alleviating the distress they're feeling. Anxious partners tend to speed up during conflict. If you're shutting down and from the outside it looks like you're disengaged, then they're probably just going to keep escalating. That's not going to end very well.
