The Basic Units of Language

So if language is a computational system of a discrete infinity, what are its basic units? It's basic units. The minimal- the minimal meaning-bearing units. They're sort of like words, kind of word-like, but not really. What does it mean to be an intellectual? It means to be regarded as someone who has right and authority to speak about general issues of human interest.
