Illusory Faces Engage Our Social Perception System

People tend to see illusory faces as male rather than female about four times as often, the researchers found. The reason we default to seeing males is that our brains need more information before we see a face is female. Think of a smily face imoji - most people would probably say that it looks more male than female. Same is true of lego characters and couch cushions.
