The Future of Homeschooling

Almost everybody I know in the Linux world who's a serious hacker didn't learn it in school. They learned it on their own like you did her from each other, including kernel hackers and Linus himself for that matter. My son is four, and we have been doing pre-k with him right here at the house. He knows all of his letters and numbers, and we're working on what sounds the letters make. And he’s right on the cusp of that breakthrough for really being able to start reading. It will be so fun to let him loose on the world of books and all the things that are out there.

I want to ask you more about the work, but I want to rewind back to your homeschooling days because homeschooling is fascinating to me. I have a friend as a quick homeschooling story is my favorite story on the topic. A friend who's a PhD in statistics, among other things, she has another PhD as well. And he teaches and he was on a plane. He's sitting next to a very fascinating woman, talking about her offspring, who were all adults. She's an older woman, and they all were high achievers and all kinds of things. And she talked about how she credited homeschooling with their achievements. And he said being a statistics guy, well, don't you think that at least some of that has to do with her identity? And she said, well, I would have thought that too, if they weren't all adopted. So, and I'm wondering, so two things. One is that you have kids, we need to learn a little bit more about that. And are you going to homeschool them? Are you like, is that a choice facing you yet? And wait, where do you go with that? Because let me put that in a little more context. Almost everybody I know in the Linux world who's a serious hacker didn't learn it in school. They learned it on their own like you did her from each other, including kernel hackers and Linus himself for that matter. So that's a built homeschooling as it were, but still. Yeah, that's interesting.

And Linus is an interesting case too, because he was going to college studying computer science. But the whole Linux thing was just just a side project that had nothing to do with his, you know, his degree. And then eventually he went, was it his masters or his doctorate? He was able to finally do some Linux work for the education, but it was very, it was very much parallel courses. So yeah, you're right. A lot of us did just pick it up on our own. Although this

of a tangent, but the world has kind of changed since then. And in some educational places, particularly higher education, they have embraced open source. And you can go to some colleges, even some high schools, and learn about, you know, how open source works, how to use Git, how to run a project. And I think that's great. There is not just one way to get from, you know, being a four year old to being an 18 year old with a good education. There are great private schools. There are great public schools. And then there are parents that are great at homeschooling. And then there's even things like co-ops, where you may not, as a parent, you may not be great at teaching every subject. You can get plugged into a homeschooling co-op, which is, some of them are almost like little private schools, but they're not, they're not quite. And so they're not under the same regulations. They're able to run a lot cheaper. So there's, there's all kinds of options out there. My son is four, and we have been doing pre-k with him right here at the house. He knows all of his letters and numbers, and we're working on, you know, what sounds the letters make. And he is right on the cusp of having that breakthrough. You know, I kind of think of it that you know all of these facts, and that at some point the facts just kind of collide together in your brain. You have the light bulb moment when it's, oh, that's what that means. And he's right on the cusp of that breakthrough for really being able to start reading. I'm very much looking forward to that day. He's going to be so fun to let him loose on the world of books and all the things that are out there.
