Ray Finch is a teacher of English at an Anglican school in Southern African nation of Botswana. He harbors frustrated literary ambitions and sardotically reflects Afropos of a huge opus sent to him from San Francisco by his younger brother, Rex. A new arrival in town, Davis Morrill, a pale black American doctor who has a messianic scheme to rid Africa of Christianity and credulism.
