For me, there are a few layers that I listen for and assume underlie certain fights about sex, money, dishwasher. There's the one of childhood histories; how are each one in the couple reenacting childhood issues? Maurice Appreas talks about these intergenerational errands that are passed down, that still need to be resolved. That's why some family therapists start any kind of family therapy with these elaborate genograms.

1. What we are really fighting about when we’re fighting about the dishwasher.

2. We can stop asking whether what’s missing is a “want” or a “need” – and the question to ask instead.

4. How to start thinking of our partnerships as our own mini political systems.
