The building blocks of life, the basic amino acids for even nucleotides that make up DNA, are present in the interstellar medium. We believe life came into existence on this planet about a billion years after the Earth roughly cooled. If you look at what the highest atomic number element that the human being needs to survive, I think it's iodine at around atomic number 56.
