The Influence of Marx and Engels on the Chartism Movement

Engels witnessed parts of the chartis movement and history of chartism firsthand when he was up in Manchester. He arrived in England in 1842, which is the same year as a general strike that reached revolutionary scale. The purpose of these democratic rights was never just an end in themselves; it was to transform workers' conditions. And so it wouldn't be wrong to say that chartism was the first revolutionary movement of the working class in history.
