The Role of Carthage Jail in the Church's History

Hard feelings toward the people who killed Joseph and Hiram Smith did not quickly fade. For years, Carthage Jail was a place associated with tremendous trauma for Church members. How did the jail become a site that more than 100,000 people visit each year?
