This becomes an inherently subjective, theoretically motivated determination. And it does make me think of Dilbert. One of the things I really like about this is that it puts the onus on the researcher to define what it means for things to be equivalent. If that seems like too onerous a task, it's exactly what we ask you to do when doing a power analysis for a study.
