The crescent moon in Van Gogh's starry night is actually sculpted from something called Indian yellow, which has itself a, an unpleasant backstory. Forensic research into the use of that pigment did reveal the presence of acids that could only come from animal urine. The color was used by Turner and, in many of his, uh, luminous sunsets, but also by Van Gogh on canvas.
