The vision for NumPy is to have this object that represents dimensional arrays and like at any level of abstraction you want, but basically it could be a black box. So the key for me was I was going to write NumPy and then move SciPy to depend on NumPy. There's a ton of work in creating that backward compatibility that also created echoes in today's object. Some of the complexity in today'sobject is actually from that goal of backward compatibility with other communities.
