The Bottom Up Approach to Programming

Learn how a programm actually gets run on hardware. Get familiar with data structures and algorithms, because you will be able to make better engineering decisions in terms of when to use them or that kind of thing. Don't worry about too much about how it's written; just get it done but then take a step back and look at what you've written - discover what things you could improve.
