The Relationship Between Candido Aguilar and Admiral Fletcher
In late 1913, at the height of the struggle against constitutionalist general in Tuxpan, Candido Aguilar was involved in an incident with the US Navy. As his troops moved into the Tuxpan oil region in Veracruz, US Navy ships under the command of Admiral Fletcher were lying anchored off the island of Lobos. Fletcher sent the following message: I am instructed by my government to inform you that if you do not leave the oil zone within 24 hours,. I shall land US troops to safeguard the lives and interests of American citizens and other nationals.
