Eric Liu: I want to stick for a little bit while longer with just the radical pragmatism. So I'm wondering if you could tell us a story that you relate in the book about a Hungarian physician named Ignat Similice. He discovered by mistake that if he washed his hands with chlorine until they were slippery between each patient, he had almost no child med fever on his wards. Liu: Having an idea that's right prematurely can be very dangerous. The highest levels of our western academic world have responded very poorly to new ideas.
