The History of the NHS

Louis Hidalgo was speaking to Dr John Marx in 2009 for that edition of Witness History. In 1948 Britain was the country bankrupted and weirried by war and the NHS was a huge financial commitment. The health service started as it must inevitably do I think in any part of the world, he says. It is obvious that it will take some years for the scheme to bed itself in but most of the shortcomings which have been revealed are not the result of the intrinsic defects of the service itself.
