They make you step back for a second and reconsider the things that you're doing. It might seem lke like the descriptive language, for instance, outside enormous puffed clouds dwelled overhead,. That sort of flowery language might seem like its indulgent, but it actually serves a purpose in that he returns to this moment several times throughout the paper.
