Don't put any pressure on yourself to make something look like something you've already seen, that some one told you was a good way to do this. Get a big pad, and just as soon as i know, it's off, start over. I would also encourage trying different mediums. Don't stick with a sharpened pencil in a pad of paper. If it's less sharp, it doesn't show the imperfections as much. It can also convey an idea much more boldly with contrast than trying to draw really sharp, small lines. Just mix it up.
