Back in the 1930s consent between doctors and patient was not black and white like it is today. The idea that patients may also be entitled to sharing the burdens of decisions with their doctors was never part of the ethos of medicine. In the last 50 years, medical schools suddenly started to shift teaching from treating disease towards treating patients. That meant laying out the options of treatment plans for your patients and then letting the patients decide for themselves the best path forward.
