The Rise and Fall of Saddam Hussein

Saddam Hussein saw pre-Islamic antiquity as a source of possible pride and inspiration for the modern Middle East. In his propaganda he often likened himself to ancient leaders like Gilgamesh, Hammurabi and Sargon. He also wrote several novels, the last of which was a historical fiction novel taking place in ancient Mesopotamia. The University of Mosul had to rebuild its main library, its hospital, its medical school and its academic press all of which had been burned down or severely damaged by rockets and looted in the war.
