Hardecanut was the claimant to the english throne. He made a conditional, negotiated agreement with the norwegian chieftain magnus. It kept open the possibility that these domains might eventually be reassembled if one or the other ruler failed to produce a successor. Now decades later, magnus's son, harold hardrada, had taken up rulership in norway. So he apparently accepted tostig's proposition to join together and use their combined support to attack northern england.
