Ken Clark never stood a chance. He was so at odds with his party over Europe. His party was never going to vote for him. Dennis Healy had been labor chancellor and that is a tough, tough gig. And he kind of emerged with a sense of weightiness but also quite popular. It was a sort of preemptive strike against what Johnson did subsequently.
