Pre-Edipal Symbolic Work
The child has desire for the maternal function, or in this case the primary caregiver. But they realize that this primary caregiver is also interested in other stuff. Car keys, perhaps the phone. And so the child thinks, well, if I can secure this imaginary object for myself, then I will be able to attend to have the maternal figure attend to me. So it's this kind of pre-edipal, highly imaginative move where the child figures, if they can align themselves with whatever else mommy or daddy is interested in, they will in turn be able to satisfy their desire forMommy orDaddy's affection.
