He'd been opposed to the first Gulf war, but then he spent time in Iraq after that. Hitchens: There was this Kurdish region in northern Iraq that was sort of, uh, managed to assert a kind of de facto independence from Saddam Hussein's government. Some of these local leaders were people who had been 1970s radicals too and could speak to Hitchens in his own language.
