A national digital currency could be attractive to some governments. It would allow the more authority over the monetary system. The US and European Central Bank are among the many looking at options. China has rolled out a digital yuan in a pilot programme covering 23 cities. Officials would be able to track all digital cash in circulation, making it harder to loan money or evade taxes.
