You should always be trying to pare down to more money, less roommates. Tell the other guy if he is your friend and it's a normal situation. Some guys actually like living with female roommates that they're not interested in at all. If you do have a roommate, you're still saving money. That's the whole point. Nobody would do this shit otherwise.
