The donkey is this kind of lowly beast, I think. That's how it comes across in the Midsummer Night's dream. It's bottom who has been turned into a donkey, but given the head of a donkey. And he is one of the rude mechanicals. He's quite a kind of overconfident character. But also, crucially, Titania needs to be brought down. You know, for the queen of the fairies to fall in love with a donkey-headed kind of - even worse than a working-class donkey as well.
