In 175 BC, Antiochus Epiphanes begins this severe persecution against the Jews. He not only has this what we might call hard totalitarianism, he also has a soft totalitarianism. The things get easier if you just kind of look like everyone else, live like everyone else. This is the same old, same old temptation that we saw the moment the children of Israel wandered into or walked into were led into the promised land.
