Chaucer and the Spice Trade
Chaucer was born in an area of London known as Ventory Ward. His father was indeed a wine merchant and his mother was also a property owner. He would have been watching the ships coming in and then going out again, laden with products from all over the world. The spice trade is so interesting because it reminds us of how globally connected the world was back in the 14th century.
