Theosophical Society - The Story of Elsie
Elsie and frances were given a camera by their father for an afternoon. They took pictures of four fairies dancing on the grass in front of them. Theosophists believed that, with awakening psychic powers, humans would eventually be able to see nature spirits. Elsie's mother attended a meeting of the theosophical society where she was introduced to fairy photographs. Four experts at kodak said the photos showed no ins of being faked but refused to certify that they were authentic. In 1917, two young cousins carried a camera into an English dell and returned with a photo of fairies. When Arthur Conan Doyle took up the story it became a worldwide sensation. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll tell the story of the Cottingley Fairies, a curiosity that would remain unexplained for most of the 20th century.
We'll also remember a ferocious fire and puzzle over a troublesome gnome.
