Is There a Social Parochialism?
Derek Walmsley: I was thinking about the background of recent political events within the US and the UK, and the deep divides between communities. And wondering whether we've just created a society where affection has been squeezed out; there's no room for that taste to develop. Where do you use parochial? It's interesting in that we used to have parishes. He asks if another aspect of the corrosion of affection or the absence of it actually has to do with a decline in the formal rules of courtesy which govern public interactions.
