In 1930, FDR writes a letter to John Kingsbury about making America fairly radical for at least a generation. He says he's got fascist Italy in his head and the elite of America that time was calling for a Mussolini. In 32, Hoover accuses them of being a dangerous radical who wants to literally destroy the foundations of the American system of life. Well, Hoover was right. FDR decided this was the moment. And he'd already free 20 years as a political liberal first a progressive.
